February 3-4, 1980
24 Hours of Daytona
Daytona Beach, Florida
Ferrari 365 GTB/4 “Daytona” #65
Finish: 14th (4th in GTO)
Tony and John Morton had one final race in S/N 16407 at the 1980 Daytona 24 Hours. This time the car was entered by Nicholas/McRoberts racing; however, Otto Zipper was not around to oversee the preparation.
They got the eleven-year-old design qualified at 2:01.54. Tony was running in fourth overall, when the left rear stub axle broke in the last turn in the infield. Tony thought, that can’t be my wheel running ahead of the car, but it was! There were only a few hours left, and they would have had a high place finish and win just as the year before.
Tony said: “Without a doubt, this was the very best 365 GTB ever!”
